The History of Banoffee Pie

Banoffee pie is a fantastic pudding. It is usually made using crushed biscuits as a base and then filled with cool caramel to make the toffee centre. Sliced bananas then make another layer followed by cream. Many people then furnish it with melted chocolate or a dusting of chocolate powder.

It is thought that the pudding was created by Ian Dowding and Nigel Mackenzie in 1972. Mackenzie owned a restaurant in East Sussex, England called The Hungry Monk and Dowding was the chef.

As legend has it, Dowding first thought of the idea during his time in the US. He was introduced to a recipe called “Blum’s Coffee Toffee Pie” which basically was made up of a toffee filling with a coffee flavoured cream on top. The trouble with this recipe was that it was incredibly difficult to make, and rarely came out as the chef wanted – it was either too soggy or hard as a rock.

Together they adapted the idea to toffee and bananas and made up the word “banoffi”, which has since turned into “banoffee” and is now part of the English language used to describe anything that tastes of banana and toffee.

Confident that they had perfected the dish, Dowding added it to the dessert menu of the restaurant. It proved highly successful, with diners only making reservations on the condition that the new pie was on the menu – after a while they realised that it could not be removed from the menu at all!

Over the next few years Dowding said that other restaurants started to make similar desserts and sell it to compete with The Hungry Monk. They also started to hear rumours that the dessert had taken off in America and restaurants there were beginning to sell it. Then rumours from Australia – it had slowly started creeping around the world. During the late 1970s it was also a highly popular dish in India.

In 1994 some supermarkets began to sell banoffee pie, calling it an “American pie”. Wanting to prove it’s origins, Mackenzie offered a 10,000 prize to anyone who could produce a pre-1972 menu with the pudding listed. To my knowledge nobody has come forward.

Over the years the pie became more and more popular and is now served all over the world.
